FAQs

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

1

Please bring a valid, unexpired government‑issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID. The document you need notarized should be complete and ready for signing, but do not sign it ahead of time — you’ll sign in front of the notary.

Can you tell me which notarial act I need?

2

Most documents specify whether they require an acknowledgment, jurat, or witness signature. If the document does not state this, I can explain the differences, but you must choose the notarial act. Notaries cannot decide for you or provide legal advice.

Do I need to fill out the document before the appointment?

3

Yes. All blanks should be filled in before the notarization begins. A notary cannot notarize incomplete documents. If you’re unsure about a section, you may write “N/A” or a line through unused spaces.

Can you notarize a document that is already signed?

4

No. For most notarial acts, you must sign the document in the notary’s presence. If the document requires an acknowledgment, you may have signed earlier, but you must still appear in person to confirm the signature is yours.

What forms of ID are accepted?

6

Valid, unexpired government‑issued photo identification, including:

  • Driver’s license

  • State ID

  • Passport

  • Military ID

  • Permanent resident card

Expired IDs cannot be accepted.

Can you notarize documents for family members?

7

Notaries in Tennessee may notarize for family members as long as the notary is not a party to the document and does not benefit from it. If there is any potential conflict of interest, I will not proceed with the notarization.

Do you provide legal advice or help fill out documents?

8

No. Notaries are not permitted to give legal advice, interpret documents, or tell you what to choose. I can explain the notarization process, but any legal questions should be directed to an attorney.

How long does a notarization appointment take?

9

Most appointments take 5–10 minutes, depending on the number of signatures and the type of document. Multi‑signature or multi‑document appointments may take longer.
